FAQ
How Much Does a Car Respray Cost?
NZ prices for partial and full vehicle resprays, and what drives the cost.
Full respray vs partial respray
There are two main types of spray painting jobs:
- Partial respray: only the damaged or faded section is resprayed, colour-matched to the rest of the car
- Full respray: the entire vehicle is stripped back and repainted in a new or existing colour
What affects the cost of a car respray?
- Vehicle size: larger vehicles need more paint and more time
- Paint type: solid colours are cheaper than metallic, pearlescent or specialty finishes
- Preparation work: rust, dents or old paint must be dealt with before painting, adding to the cost
- Number of coats: quality resprays use multiple coats (primer, base coat, clear coat) for durability
- Colour matching: blending adjacent panels for an invisible repair takes skill and time
Typical respray costs in NZ
| Job type | Approximate cost |
|---|---|
| Single panel (bumper / door) | $300 – $1,000 |
| 2–3 panels | $800 – $2,500 |
| Half car respray | $1,500 – $4,000 |
| Full respray (budget) | $3,000 – $5,000 |
| Full respray (quality finish) | $5,000 – $10,000+ |
Why cheap resprays aren't always cheaper
A low-cost respray that skips proper preparation, uses cheap paint or cuts corners on the finish will fade, peel or crack within a few years, costing you more to fix in the long run. Quality spray painting done right lasts the lifetime of the vehicle.
